Wheelchair Transportation Safety Sled Tests at 30mph/20g Tests conducted at the University of Michigan Transporation Research Institute

Abstract: This series of videos show the simulation of a wheelchair and occupant experiencing a 30mph/20g sled test (the wheelchair and crash dummy experience a 30 mile per hour change in velocity and a deceleration equal to 20 times the force of gravity). Each segment shows the contribution of one aspect of transportation safety technology: 4-point wheelchair securement, 3-point occupant restraint, and the use of a WC19-compliant wheelchair. The first demonstration depicts the misuse of the 4-point securement system (without using any 4-point securement straps and using only 2-point securement straps) followed by the correct securement, using all four straps, properly attached and tensioned. The second demonstration depicts the misuse of occupant restraints (using no 3-point belt restraints to secure pelvis and shoulders, using only the shoulder safety belt, and using only the pelvis safety belt) followed by the correct use of both the shoulder and pelvis occupant restraints. The third shows what can happen when a non-WC19-compliant manual wheelchair is involved in a crash, followed by the results when using a WC19 crash-tested wheelchair, which are strong and easy to secure without any interference routing wheelchair tiedowns and occupant restraints.
