Abstract: The aim of the present study is to verify the direct and indirect relationships between stigma awareness, social identity, and quality of life in people with physical and sensory disabilities. Stigma awareness in people with disabilities affects their quality of life and well-being. On the other hand, non-membership in a group and absence of social ties also have negative consequences. However, the role of membership in a stigmatized group is unknown. A total of 192 people with disabilities participated in this study. The theoretical model that best fits the resulting data shows that social identity has an indirect negative relation with quality of life while stigma awareness has a direct negative relation with quality of life. It can be concluded that belonging to a group when stigmatized does not protect against the effect of stigma awareness on quality of life.
