Ultralight Wheelchair Skills 
The NIDRR-funded Northwest Regional Spinal Cord Injury System (H133N110009) continues its excellent series of SCI Forum Presentations with "Ultralight Wheelchair Skills: From Rehab to Real World." Physical Therapist Elisa Smith provides practical tips and explanations for perfecting wheelchair skills, including wheelies for curbs and maneuvering in small spaces, on gravel roads, and up and down hills. NIDILRR News and Events: 

Final Informational Webinar on the NIDRR Long-Range Plan TOMORROW!
Join NIDRR Director K. Charlie Lakin and Ruth Brannon, Director, Research Sciences Division, for the final webinar on the proposed NIDRR Long-Range Plan for Fiscal Years 2012-2017. This session includes a brief overview of the plan, information about the comment solicitation process, and an extended question/answer session with participants. The May 31st session takes place online and by phone from 3-4pm EDT. To participate:

Policy Forum Webcast Archive Now Available
On May 16, NIDRR Director Charlie Lakin participated in a web forum presented by the Center for Studying Disability Policy at Mathematica Policy Research. Dr. Lakin and the other panelists discussed "The Future for Young Americans with Disabilities: Economic Success or Dependence?" The webinar recording and related presentation slides are now available to download.

Congratulations to Edward Steinfeld, ArchD, principal investigator for the NIDRR-funded Rehab Engineering Research Center on Universal Design in the Built Environment (H133E100002), on being named a State University of New York (SUNY) Distinguished Professor. The Distinguished Professor is the highest recognition in the SUNY system.

App Design Challenge from DOL
The Dept of Labor issued a challenge this month: Build tools to promote the employment of people with disabilities using publicly available information, tools, resources, and employment data. DOL is looking for a few good apps to help job seekers, employers, administrators, and advocates close the employment gap for people with disabilities. Prizes range from $2,000 to $5,000. Submission information is online at
