Project title:
Supporting Aging Caregivers and Adults with Developmental Disabilities in Future Planning - Pre and Post assessment tools
Disability targeted:
Developmental disabilities
Study purpose or goal:
To test the efficacy of a family future planning intervention for adults with developmental disabilities and family caregivers
Who administers this tool?:
Family caregivers and individuals with developmental disabilities
How is it administered?:
The intervention consisted of a legal/financial training session followed by five additional small-group workshops. Individuals with developmental disabilities were included through simultaneous groups co-facilitated by self-advocates and adapted to thei.
Development background:
These pre and post assessment tools were developed to test the efficacy of an intervention to support aging caregivers and adults with developmental disabilities
Development methodology:
Prior to development of the intervention other future planning intervention projects across the country were contacted and materials reviewed. The RRTC on Aging with Developmental Disabilities advocate advisory board, consisting of individuals with disabilities and family caregivers, also provided input. Due to psychological and emotional barriers involved in planning, a peer support model was adopted for the intervention, where individuals with disabilities and aging family caregivers support one another in developing plans for the future.
Limitations:
Individuals with developmental disabilities must have ability to communicate reliably during interview
Findings:
The intervention consisted of a legal/financial training session followed by five additional small-group workshops
Interpretations:
Individuals with developmental disabilities were included through simultaneous groups co-facilitated by self-advocates and adapted to thei.
Implications:
Data analysis was complete at the time of the interview. Researchers developed and evaluated a family future planning intervention –The Future is Now: A Future Planning Training Curriculum for Families and Their Adult Relatives with Developmental Disabili
Impact of these findings on the field:
These instruments have been found to be reliable and should be useful to others interested in future planning interventions.
Peer review status:
Results are currently being submitted for journal publication –Supporting Aging Caregivers and Adults with Developmental Disabilities in Future Planning (Heller & Caldwell, 2004).
Who uses the collected data?:
Community agencies within the developmental disabilities or the aging service systems.
