Abstract: The goal of this project is (1) to determine the feasibility of using an Accessible Interactive Fiction (AIF) story to help high school students (ages 14-18) with visual disabilities (VI) to practice and improve their understanding of one financial literacy concept (specifically creating and using a Spending Plan) and (2) to enable their teachers to use instructional time more efficiently by delivering more targeted instruction. Project objectives include: (1) defining the requirements for the My Spending Plan AIF story within Financial Fitness Adventures (FFA); (2) developing a computer-based AIF story; (3) building a prototype web service to capture the VI student’s progress and to display it in a dashboard for the teacher; and (4) achieving a 15% improvement in financial literacy test scores among students to prove the system’s acceptability and effectiveness. The intended outcome of this project is to achieve the VI students’ acceptance of this intervention as an engaging and useful way of learning the financial concept, as measured through surveys to the VI students and their teacher, leading to a financial literacy skills training system for VI students to use under teacher guidance.
